Fields in LEAP documents can be formatted to match your document style. For example, you can change capitalisation, date formats, and number formats. You can also add standard formatting, such as bold, underline, or italics as you normally would in Word.

To format a field, click on the outside of the field to highlight the field name.

Important: if you click inside the field, selecting the content, instead of the field name, the formatting may appear correctly while you are working on the document. However, after you save, close and reopen the document, the formatting will not be retained. This is because the content was formatted, rather than the field itself.

To apply formatting:

If a field is not updating, or something does not look right, first return to the matter and check that relevant data is entered in Matter Details.

To check the Fields within your document, you can Toggle Field Names to help identify any issues. Fields will appear:

• Blue if they may need checking or syncing
• Orange if they are active and functioning correctly

To turn on Field Names, go to Editing > Toggle Field Name in the LEAP for Word ribbon.

Toggled Fields will display as shown below in your document so you can identify them more easily.

You can also use Check Fields to synchronise the fields and relink the data. This helps ensure the correct information pulls through into your document.

To Check Fields, go to Editing > Check Fields in the LEAP for Word ribbon.

Adding a new document type helps make document management quicker, easier, and more consistent across the firm.

Because document types are created at the firm level, they can be accessed from any matter without needing to search through folders or precedents. This saves time and reduces the frustration of trying to locate the correct document.

It also helps ensure everyone in the firm is working from the same, up-to-date content, improving consistency and efficiency across your documents and workflows.

When you duplicate a LEAP precedent or form and customise it for your firm, the link to the LEAP backend is broken. This means any future updates made by LEAP to the original form or precedent will not automatically apply to your duplicated version.

Only the original LEAP forms and precedents that remain linked to the LEAP backend will continue to receive updates.

Because your duplicated precedent is unique to your firm, we recommend keeping an eye on the LEAP Content Blog, where updates to LEAP forms and precedents are recorded.

Use the search box in the Browse tab and enter a keyword or keywords. The results will include all LEAP forms (LL code) and By Lawyers precedents (BLFL code) and AI prompts (PT code) with that word in the title.

A precedent is the template or blueprint used to create a document. It includes the fields, layout, formatting, and style.

A document is the final output created from that precedent.

No. Documents that have already been created in existing matters will not be affected.

Only new documents created from that precedent after the update has been accepted will use the updated version.

Yes. Once a document type is updated, the changes are available firm wide.

Yes. Right-click the precedent name and select History of Changes from the menu.

Select the ellipsis menu and choose the option to show deleted precedents. Once enabled, any deleted precedents will appear in red.

Our content team are currently working on functionality that will allow AI to scan documents within your matter. It will then suggest data that can be added to the fields in your Matter Details.

If you are acting on behalf of a Trust and you want to create a new matter, you can use an existing matter as a starting point to help reduce the need to re-enter data.

From the Matter List, select the Trust matter, right-click and choose New Matter Based on this Matter.

You can select the tables you want to keep, such as beneficiary details, and deselect any tables that are not required.

If the new matter is for a different matter type, such as General Trust Advice, select the correct Matter Type. The tables will display the information you chose to keep from the original matter along with any tables that relate to the new Matter Type.
