Cross-referencing documents

There does not seem to be a way to cross reference a document in the document register eg. in situations where we act for both parties on a deed. Has anyone else found a work around for this when there is only one original document and therefore only one packet (that must be ascribed to one client only). In our previous system we could cross-reference to another client and just use the one packet number.
